Music- the elixir of my life

OOncha koi Mera naam kar diya...........

This song , from the movie MAIN, MERI BIWI AUR WOH , just energizes me whenever i m outta power....... Ghazals and Hindustani music bring u back to life..... They have the ability to mystify ur hearts with their soothing tunes and swaras that melt ur brains.... More than a lullaby to me......

Once i had attended this concert by ARUNA SAIRAM..... It was not only a treat for one's ears but also for the brains... She is so much experienced and mature enough to know where she needs to give stress upon the aksharas , i mean the words(lyrics).... Many singers miss that spashtam..... sudha ragunathan is the first person in my detest-list..... She is more a professional than a divine like aruna sairam...... A person with a music knowledge , not necessarily a critic, can picture the divine grace from the voice and the way they bring out the swara sancharas and neravals.......

Once asked by a person from the audience , the difference between HINDUSTANI MUSIC AND CARNATIC , aruna gave an impressive answer..

HINDUSTANI- it just gives kinda curve to a straight note
CARNATIC- it straightens a curved note

Can it be put simpler than this..... The power of hindustani is ur note sustenance,, how long can u give beauty to a particular note whereas carnatic demands more of spashtam , i mean stress upon the lyrics and grip on each swaras... u straighten each swara and try to implement a combination of aarohanam and avarohanam of that raaga.... A person should know the nuances of a raaga to fully play with its swaras...... As my patron ,,my manasiga guru MAHARAJA PURA SANTHANAM SIR does.... U need a divine force, some devotion when u try to perform .... Ppl cannot practise b4 a concert.... One has to imagine the swaras spontaneously and deliver them in the concert hall.

How to Master hindustani????????????????

This is not a daunting task..... All u have to do is hell lotta practice and follow certain techniques.... To sustain on a particular note , u have to mould ur voice to be able to do that....
A little bit of knowledge in carnatic music will help a lot in this case....
For example there s not much of a difference between Hindustani kaapi and kaapi raaga.......

My favourite raagas are many ,of which i would like to mention a few,
1.varaali
2.keeravani
3.karaharapriya
4.aahiri
5.brindavana saaranga

I ve even composed a tamil song on brindavana saaranga..... Whenever u feel like enjoying the Lord almighty in the form u want him to i.e u want to decorate him in ur own way..... u can sing the raaga Yaman kalyani,....There s a purandara das bajan, called BHOOSHANA KE BHOOSHANA , raaga: yaman kalyani ...... I always get lost in paradise when i hear that song...

Bhajans are kinda boost to ur own self... MORALE ... It just activates ur body parts ... bhajans demand more of vigour, grace than melody ....... one should be able to sing them from the naabhi and try to maintain the tempo not trying to lose the vigour....

The set of songs that keeps me alive.....
1. Hey govinda- raaga : desh
2. O ranga sai- a krishna pancha ratna raaga: Hari kamboji
3. kalikiyunte- raaga:keeravani
4. Rama nama mey thuthi- raaga:desh
5. En nenjil palli kondavan ranga nayakan- raaga: yaman kalyani (composer - yesudas )
6. Bho shambho- raaga: revathi (MAHARAJAPURA SANTANAM)

The list is endless.........
Music s just not my hobby , my passion or a lullaby to put me down to sleep or a LOOlluby (its my slang, to indicate those who like to sing in bathrooms and loos)......

Music s the elixir of my life and i m not gonna sell it as a profession ... coz i have to live with it... I can share it wit u ppl but i dont wanna disown it by trying to make it as my step towards fame.....

this s Murali here da...
Hey i strongly disagree wid u da..
Do u mean to say tht hindustani s more soothing than carnatic..?? well not always... in carnatic U have varieties da.. U hav songs tht have to be sung with great amt of zeal and energy.. SPASHTAM as u put it, is very much an essential ingredient... and u hav to sing it from wat u call Naabi (i sps).. But ther are songs which hav to be sung in a lighter way(too much of stress ud infact spoil its very own beauty)... And abt the swaras, no form of music gives such importance to Kalpana swaras,Niraval,(the so calld Raagam thaanam pallavi) etc... as carnatic does... To me all hindustani songs seem to be stereotypical...don think i hav disrespect for it..(i don desecrate any form of music) but thts wat i feel...Ofcourse hind.. songs can soothen ur mood, touch ur heart but finally u fall asleep...Can it bring the lost enthu in u???Jus think and answer...Wat u call the swara aalaapana must be rendered in a way tht does not deviate from the raga.. So wen u curve a swara (as u put t)too much u tend to come out of tht swara position...Even gamakam or brigas or wat ever u call are like paayasam in a feast.. U can have a cup or 2... Not more than tht..or else it gets too saccharine...
PS: All my comments made above are based on my hearing knowledge and i don claim to have mastery over any form of music...

stoic,
ur comments are always welcome and u r not required to master anything to comment on a topic... Wat u say is right but when u say that carnatic songs can b sung in a lighter mood then they would come under semi classical.... Classical itself means stereotype , which demands some grace and clarity on the swaras that u sing.... Hindustani is not the way u think buddy.... It s simple if u ve mastered classical music.... Its just based on how much u can sustain on a note rather than ur briga or swara sancharas....Kalpana swaram is the most important part in classical similarly u have certain substitutes in hindustani.. I mean its equivalent.... Always u cannot expect to bring out ur lost enthu or energize u .... it depends only on the rasa of the song... So u cannot compare Hindustani and classical each has its own beauty in one way or the other.....

keep commentin bey.....

who said those songs(lighter ones) come under semi-classical..?? ther are such songs which very much come under classical...Is Krishna Nee Begane a semi-classical??? I don think so.. ther r so many such examples...And even if they are classified as semi are nt they an integral part of any carnatic katcheri... And don say tht hindustani s simple...

Well, Nice one Machi... Here is my comment, As i See it there is a beauty in both forms of Music.. From my experience, Currently learning both forms, Hindustani is not about overdoing and most certainly it will not put you to sleep :) unless the raga is destined to.. Carnatic classical has its own style, Its real tough mastering it, but as you put it, once you are in the process of learning carnatic, Hindustani will come naturally to you provided you have an open mind about other forms of music.. There are a few songs which sound terrific in hindustani , not so much attractive in the classical form. There are many examples for the vice-versa as well.

As for Murali's comments :
Good one Murali, but there are few things, Swara sthana and spashtam in Hindustani also exists, It is the curve that brings beauty to Hindustani, If the curve actually tends to alter the swara sthana then its actually a mistake by the singer and Hindustani music as such cannot be held responsible...

gr8 going shyam, Nice one....
